About the event

My Side of the Mountain 

With a mix of discussions and activities, we explore the lessons from the book My Side of the Mountain by. Jean Craighead George.

Session 1: Introduction to Bushcraft and "My Side of the Mountain" Objective: Introduce students to the book "My Side of the Mountain" and the concept of bushcraft, emphasizing the importance of safety and self-reliance in the wilderness.

Session 2: Shelter Building Objective: Teach students how to build a safe and effective shelter using natural materials, inspired by Sam's tree house in the book.

Session 3: Foraging and Food Safety Objective: Educate students on safe foraging practices, identifying edible plants, and understanding the basics of nutrition in the wild, while emphasising the dangers that are also present in eating unidentified wild foods.

Session 4: Firecraft and Camp Cooking Objective: Teach children how to safely build and manage a fire, and use it for cooking, inspired by Sam’s experiences.

Session 5: Navigation and Emergency Preparedness Objective: Equip students with basic navigation skills and emergency preparedness knowledge, ensuring they know what to do if they get lost.

Wrap-Up and Celebration: - Reflect on the lessons learned from "My Side of the Mountain" and how they can be applied in real-life bushcraft and everyday situations. - Encourage students to share their favorite experiences from the program. - Hand out certificates of completion and celebrate with a small outdoor feast or activity.

What to bring:

Bring everything you need for a weekend camp, tent, sleeping gear, weather suitable clothing, food, as well as a day pack and water bottle.
